ABOUT THE LAB

ABOUT "THE LAB"

The Performance Laboratory No. 33 (also known as The Lab No. 33 or simply The Lab) is a consultancy and think tank focused on performance. It comprises thought leaders, subject matter experts, and creative thinkers who collectively contribute ideas and share their experiences to address performance-related issues for organizations and individuals worldwide.

Founded in 2013 by Tab Edwards, Michael Maupin, and Eddie Bowleg, The Lab originated as an informal collective of friends, acquaintances, and colleagues from prominent firms such as IBM, JP Morgan Chase, Dell, Microsoft, Hitachi, Hewlett-Packard, and others. Initially gathering to brainstorm and solve pressing problems and organizational challenges, the group provided pro bono assistance to non-profits and start-ups. What began in a colleague's dining room affectionately dubbed "the lab" has evolved into a formal business entity—a team of innovative minds contributing to the collective knowledge across various industries, solutions, and market segments.

WHY THE  LAB?

People often inquire about the origin of our name and why we chose to call our firm "The Lab." Unfortunately, the story behind it isn't particularly glamorous.

Years ago, while Tab Edwards was employed as a Regional Managing Consultant at Hewlett-Packard, and Mike Maupin, a Partner in the firm, was an IBM executive, Philadelphia area small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and startups would seek their business advice. These businesses were often referred to them by friends or colleagues who respected their business expertise and their approach to helping others overcome business challenges. As their reputation grew, they began receiving inquiries from major corporations. At this point, they started offering consulting advice as a side gig, ensuring not to breach any company guidelines.

Some of the requests they received exceeded their area of expertise, prompting them to involve business colleagues who were thought leaders in those domains. For particularly complex problems, they would gather at Mike's house, order pizza, and engage in working sessions to devise solutions. Eventually, whenever faced with a challenging issue, they would say, "Let's take it to the lab [Mike's house] and dissect it." Over time, "the lab" became a metaphor for Mike's dining room—a place where they tackled problems head-on.

As for "33," it was the address where Tab Edwards started his first business venture.
